All the geografy is connected with water; wherever we find a nature or hand made river bed , the earth explodes to vegetation and oasis. Is it the water culture, where the mountain rivers are tottally used up. In fact, there is a democratic water government , stronger than the executive government, which is controlled by farmers and whose objective is to control the artificial irrigation systems , made for dikes, canals, and rural wattering ditchs.
This is the earth of "Cuyum", "huarpes", "Puelches", "Pehuenches" and other natives groups that now are . almost disapeared. Later in time, a predominant inmigration from Italia and Spain composed the majority of the 1.500.000 inhabitants in
the 18 Mendoza's departments
Its capital is located between the Andes and the plain, and has an intense commercial, cultural, services , residencial, and touristic activity. Its history starts on 2nd march of 1561, when the spanish captain Don Pedro del Castillo, founded Mendoza city.
MENDOZA CITY:
It is the most important metropolis of the Argentine west, center of the Great Mendoza, that has a million inhabitants. Strategically important point of the bioceanic central runner within the circuit of cities of the MERCOSUR. more than 9000 places of lodging, financial establishments, houses of currency exchange, car rent, travel agencies, a big network of urban transport and services with the requirements of the flow of goods and for people who visit it.
Mendoza, with more than 500 years of history, presents the appearance of a oasis city, that finds in the artificial irrigation the foundation of its existence. This system of distribution, has in the provincial north to the Mendoza river as its natural nutrient. The defrosting waters are contained, from the new dam of Potrerillos and then administered through channels and drains, (about 500 km of extension) that run parallel to the streets and irrigate more than 50.000 trees. The reason of the existence and permanence of the trees, is to avoid with its shade the evaporation of the water of irrigation of the channels. This physical cause, added to the recognized value of the tree like purifier of the air and aesthetic element, turns the protagonist of the streets and the mendocinian squares.
Like natural tourist receiving, Mendoza offers a differentiated and modern gastronomical range, from the hotels and their international food, to the small typical and traditional restaurants with its exquisite plates, watered of course, with the best wines of our land. It has a considerable productive sector and a dynamic cultural and artistic activity: universities, theaters, audiences, museums, galleries of art and samples of crafts enrich the supply. The fresh and starred nights are the perfect excuse to appreciate the City from a totally different point of view. Opened and always alive, the pubs, the places to be relaxed and te dance, theaters, cinemas and casinos, remain open until dawn.
ALTERNATIVES TO CROSS THE CITY
It can be crossed walking following the indications of the peatonal strolls, made by the Municipality, but also, using the service of City Tours that the agencies of receptive tourism offer. Also in the tourism companies you can contract the strolls to high mountain, wineries, thermal water, dams and all the variables that conform the supply of adventure tourism.
FROM THE CITY OF MUD TO THE GREEN CITY
Founded by Pedro del Castillo, in the valley of Güentota in 1861, it takes the name from the Governor and Commander of the provinces of Chile, Don García Hurtado de Mendoza. Its original location around the Arms Square, present Pedro del Castillo Square in the Foundational Area, prospered slowily until the 1861 earthquake that devastated it totally. The other flat small village made of unburnt briks, of the simple colonial architecture, líke the ruins of the jesuita temple that still subsist in the extreme northwest of the square, will yield to the new model of European, hygienist and efficient city, drawn up by the French surveyor Ballofet with center in the present lndependence Square.
The rising city also included the newness to hoist squares, streets and avenues. Strict reasons of hygiene and salubrity, (between 1889 and 1894, 26000 people died because of a large extent of difteria) made the authorities to take care seriously of the quality of the water used for human consumption, the elimination of the exhausted and the quality of the atmosphere through the plantation of trees in which it would be the Central Park. In this transformation Cipolletti engineer created hydraulic works for the efficient distribution of the water, doctor Emilio Coni, created the Plan of Salubrity and environmental Cleaning and the French landscape painter Carlos Thays designed the present San Martín Park, strategist lung of the city, that we continue enjoying after a century of its creation. At the present time the scope
of the municipality has 20 squares and four parks: San Martín,O´Higgins,Civic and Central Park in construction.

SQUARE INDEPENDENCIA AND PEATONAL SARMIENTO.
It is the greatest square of the city, with important water springs and games of water, including four blocks, as the center of the new city, after the earthquake of 1861. The boulevard of Mitre street converges to both sides. Projecting like the eastern axis, the tradicional stroll of Peatonal Sarmiento is a place that congregates coffees and spectacles in the pergola near the San Martín Avenue. This space, along with España Square and the Boulevard Mitre, from Espejo to Las Heras Avenue, reunites the local craftsmen. In front of the Independence square, towards the west, it is the modern Haytt Hotel that conserves the face of the old and tradicional Plaza Hotel, together with the building of the Casino and the Independence Theater, the cultural room that summons the official meetings.
In a perimeter of eight blocks, from the Independence square, there are four important squares: San Martín, between the Necochea streets, 9 de Julio, España and Gutierrez, Chile, between streets 25 de mayo, Peru, Gutierrez and Necochea. Italia, between the streets Peru, 25 de mayo, Montevideo and San Lorenzo. España, between the streets, España, San Lorenzo, Montevideo and 9 de julio, Each one is the center of activities and celebration of the respective colectivities.
LAS HERAS STREET AND CENTRAL MARKET
It is a unique street of our city, from its dusty origins, pavements, stone pavements or made up of solid asphalt, it locks up part of the history of the people of Mendoza. From the arrival of the Railroad, whose provincial terminal station was located in íts west extreme, Villalonga street, saw circulate thousands of immigrants and travellers, the reason why it contained a peculiar and frenetic commercial sector, mainly street, parked in its ample paths.
It is an imperdible stroll if you want to penetrate the skin of the city and to enter into the nervous entrails of its settlers, to observe its tastes and daily customs, the selection of provisions in the Central Market, epicenter of the route. With exit to the streets Patricias Mendocinas, General Paz and, of course, the singular Las Heras street, is the historical building of the market, created in the last part of 19th century, and recently restored. it is a forced trip to the the senses place, where the aromas and colors of fruits, vegetables, species, pastes, meats, cheeses, cold cuts and many things more, make the delights of the visitors. It also has, an ample place of meals, accompanied by live music.
STROLL OF THE ALAMEDA AVENUE
It is located in a section of the most important commercial street, the San Martín avenue and it contains in the east part of it the narrow street Remedios de Escalada. It consists of a peatonal route of seven blocks of length, a linear space forested by great trees, under which the old channel Tajamar circulates. it begins in Cordoba street to the south and finishes to the north in Ayacucho street. In a part of its passage, between Corrientes and Urquiza, it is the building of San Martín Library.
PEDRO DEL CASTILLO SQUARE AND MUSEUM OF THE FOUNDATIONAL AREA
It is a modern referential architectonic set inaugurated in 1993, that remembers the foundation of Mendoza, in its original site. It includes the Square, a museum, (where the Town hall was located), yard of sculture modules and an underground camer with archaeological rests.
A system of aluvional collectors protect the area from floods that long time ago caused damage.
The mural in front of the access of the museum, allows to imagine its appearance previous to the 1861 earthquake, whose tragic step, are the ruins of the First Church, known as San Francisco ruins, in the corner of streets ltuzaingó and Beltrán.
ÓHIGGINS PARK, MUNICIPAL AQUARIUS
It is born in the South flank of the Foundational Area and it extends several blocks, up to Buenos Aires street. It is a beautiful space full of trees surrounded by the Costanera Avenue and the Channel "Zanjón" Guaymallén Cacique to the east, contains infantile games, the Theater Gabriela Mistral, used for multiple spectacles, a traditional carrousel and the Municipal Aquarius, in ltuzaingo and Buenos Aires street. This building of almost six decades, has in its interior one varied range of marine and fresh water species. In front of it, there is an ophiuchus opened to the public, with infinity of snakes.
ARÍSTIDES VILLANUEVA STREET
In the last years the section of this nice avenue has received vital importance, i circulates between Belrano and Boulogne Sur Mer streets, itis a forced place in the nocturnal life where the young people congregate themselves around the innumerable gastronomical and recreational establishments of the zone, which transforms it into an imperdible place for encounters.
CULTURAL ACTIVITY
The City of Mendoza is the artistic capital of the Argentine west. Prestigious painters, sketchers, engravers, ceramists, poets, writers, actors, musícians, escultors and art critics, interact in diverse spaces within the city.

GENERAL SAN MARTÍN PARK
it has a surface of 510 hectares that include a forest patrimony of more than 300 original species of all America, Asia, Europe and Australia, meadows, paved ways, the artificial lake of 700 meters of length, ornamental works and constructions for sport activíties among them the Provincial Stage Malvinas Argentinas, constructed for the World Championship of Football'78.
The origin of this great stroll goes back to the 6th of November of 1896, when the law was sanctioned and authorized the creation of the Park of the West, its original name.
The main entrance is hierarchized by the fused iron Inner doors, constructed in England, that are crowned by the figure of a condor and the shield of Mendoza. The Hill of Gloria that is part of the park, offers within its perimeter the Greek Theater Frank Romero Day, where it is made annually the National Celebration of the Vintage, the Zoological Garden and in its summit the monument to the Army of liberatíon, builds of the Uruguayan escultor Ferrari, whose bases found in this hill, its majestic prolongation.
We could consider the Park like a great opened museum with more than 30 skillfull pieces that decorate strolls and gardens. They are possible to be appreciated specially, those that are in the stroll the Rosedal next to the lake. The tourists and visitors have that magnificent green space with restaurants, "churrasqueras" and diverse services.
